A Ragdoll Cat Is…
A ragdoll cat is a specific breed of cat, often considered to be the royalty of cat breeds. Most noticeable is their large size, setting them aside from other breeds that may appear similar,; their large muscular frame though belies a gentle and people loving nature.
The breed was created in the 1960s when a Persian cat gave birth to a litter of exceptionally gentle and calm kittens, unlike anything seen before. This lead to further breeding and the result was the ragdoll cat we know and love today.
Many owners are attracted to their soft, silky semi-long haired coat and unique colours, coupled with their laid back attitude and the strange tendency they have to ‘flop’ when held, giving them their name ‘ragdoll.’
A ragdoll cat is a cat for people who love the personality of cats but want the affection and loyalty of a dog – the ragdoll is not independent and frequently shadows their owner, preferring to spend as much time as possible with them, rather than out prowling. In fact, due to the ragdoll’s trusting and laid back nature, it is not advisable for them to be anything but an indoor cat.
Despite their large size, ragdolls tend to shed less than most other breeds of cats, so actually require less grooming, perhaps only two to three times a week, often even less, although, due to their size, they will need more food than a regular cat and a larger litter tray.
Ragdoll cats crave company, and will live fairly happily with any selection of other pets and children, young and old alike,, provided they are given the attention they need to be happy and are treated with the kindness and respect they deserve. Their gentle nature carries over to their play, whilst many cats might employ accidental scratching.
Ragdoll cats are generally very gentle and keep their claws to themselves, making them excellent cats to be around small children. Although, it is advised any pet is never left completely alone around babies.
Ragdolls display an affectionate intelligence, which makes training them a breeze. it is however important to go about training in the right way, keep in the mind the ragdoll’s love of affection and attention and use this to create easy and fun training routines that your ragdoll can follow.
A ragdoll will not respond well to negative behaviour and punishment, and since they are so docile, they will rarely defend themselves if provoked, so taking advantage of this trusting nature is never ideal.
Many ragdoll owners choose to leash train their cats as a way to ensure their safety when out and about, with ragdolls leash training is easy when combined with the much craved affection and gentle persuasion. They are not normally disobedient cats by nature, and would much rather snuggles up on your lap than tear apart your house.
A ragdoll cat will be your constant companion and friend, offering you company and gentle spirited fun, what they lack in excitement they make up for and more with their lovable and family friendly nature. While they might not be found climbing the curtains or engaging in other such fun antics, they will offer you years of unconditional love and complete trust. If you want a family pet, and a gentle companion then the splendid ragdoll cat is for you.
