Can You Make Any Money Breeding Ragdoll Cats?
I love cats, esp Ragdolls, I am a stay home writer and would love to have a small cattery and breed ragdolls. (and before anyone answers otherwise, I love animals, all of my cats are from shelters (to which I donate supplies and my time) but I want to breed this type of cat, show it and give people very loving quality kittens.
I knew I would get the preachy answers, which I do understand being a huge animal lover myself. However, I did say that I wasn’t doing it "just for the money", I love ragdolls but if I am putting all the effort into breeding quality kittens, yes I would like to make some money on it. And I cannot believe that there are all these breeders out there doing this out of the goodness of their hearts breeding kittens and making no money and just putting money into it. That makes no sense. I was asking an honest question since I would of course research it and do everything to make the animals safe and loved.

Honestly, I think you do it to better the breed and for the love of the breed, not to make money. Breeding animals is expensive no one really makes any money from it when they do it right. It is a lot of work and expensive to do properly.
YES!!!! Ragdolls are one of the most uncommon and sought after breeds. I have loved them since a small child. They are so uncommonly bred that most kittens are sold for $1000 on average. If you really do love your cats and take good care of them you should be able to make money.
before you EVEN THINK about breeding them do TONS AND TONS AND TONS of research, get TONS AND TONS AND TONS of supplies that you may need (ex medical equiptment, lots and lots of food, food dishes, toys, etc) and TALK TO BREEDERS for hints/tips and INFO. You cannot just walk into this you HAVE to know what youre doing ESPECIALLY if you love the breed. you need to learn about blood lines, diseases, how to cut back diseases, how to match up cats for HEALTHY babies and how to raise the newborn kittens. THIS IS NOT a "oh lets see what happens when spot and tiger have baby kitties" sorta thing. Its a research, research, research kinda thing where you HAVE to know what you’re doing for the animals sake.
Please dont take this badly im just very animal loving (i love ragdoll kitties too) and dont want any animals getting hurt. bad breeding can mess up tons of kitties lives, and mess up the people who bought those kitties bank accounts.
There’s no money in it.
It’s a VERY expensive hobby.
Reputable breeders and show people put out much more than they make.
There are too many Ragdolls in the world, we don’t need anymore. Just enjoy your kitties. Maybe foster some from your favorite shelter.
if you sell them.but you sound like a really nice person
As a registered breeder I can assure you you CANNOT make money breeding ANY breed of cat.
I charge $450 for my kittens, once I factor in: desexing, vaccinations, microchipping (now law where I am), food for the mother & kittens until they are 12 weeks old, registering fees, prefix registration fees, showing expenses to get my name out there, advertising, website purchase/hosting, stud service fees for if you do not own a stud, purchasing new breeding cats (which cost more than pet prices), bloodtesting on the breeding cats, pedigree software programs to ensure you don’t inbreed, etc etc etc.
At the end of the day there is nothing left as any money that you DO make goes straight back into the cats during the non-breeding season and /or buying them a bigger/better enclosure, etc etc
EDITTED TO ADD: One of my closest friends is a Ragdoll breeder and she winds up putting money into her cats from her own pocket to fund her "hobby". ALSO, you should NEVER consider breeding for money – you breed to improve & better the breed.
Before I even got my first litter of kittens I was out of pocket by close to $2,000.00 I have only just now, on my 7th litter of kittens managed to get on top of my spiralling out of control vet bill……I’m still to earn enough money to get some of the initial $2,000 back! – and I’m looking at forking more money out as I am bringing a new stud over from interstate so will need to upgrade my cats pens before his arrival, plus the cost of BUYING him.
EDITTED AGAIN TO COMMENT ON YOUR ADDITIONAL COMMENT Every single breeder I know – & I now know several 100 has not made ANY money from breeding cats. EVERYONE I spoke to when I first looked INTO breeding cats said there is ABSOLUTELY NO MONEY IN IT. It is a hobby, and EXPENSIVE ONE. You want to make money from breeding cats? Go buy a couple of queens and Breed the CRAP outta them…but don’t come crawlling to us ETHICAL registered breeders crying when your queens all have breast cancer or die because you didn’t take them to a vet when they desperately needed a C-Section. Again – THERE IS NO MONEY IN ETHICAL REGISTERED BREEDING OF CATS.
I breed Devon Rex and have done so for six years. They are an uncommon breed and forever families pay a bit higher than average for my kittens. However, I am still THOUSANDS in debt to this very expensive HOBBY. If you are making money as a cat breeder, you are either very lucky or are cutting corners and not ethical.
To buy good breeding stock costs big money. Then you have to test them for genetic conditions known to the breed, plus common feline conditions. Then you should show them to ensure they adhere to the breed standard and that you are moving the breed forward. Then there is food, shelter, ongoing vet care, unexpected and very expensive vet emergencies, advertising, pet sitters… shall I go on?
Please approach breeding pedigreed cats as a hobby. Sometimes you’ll be lucky and pocket a bit of cash, but that cash should be stashed away for a rainy day because, believe me, those rainy days do come and you must be prepared for them.
My goal is one day MAYBE to break even on my operating costs. I never expect to break even on my time, too; to do so I’d have to charge $1800 per kitten. No, I am not exagerating.
I am sure you would but the thing is if you didn’t know that there are so many kitties out there already that are getting put to sleep cause people just keep breeding them.PLEASE DON’T! If you need money get a job.
