I could mention a few more of my favorite cats that were lost to the needle- it's just heart-sickening. Meanwhile, breeders are making cats as fast as they can. Someone I know just spent $650 for a fancy cat. That means one less stray will be adopted. Thank you. The other cat, who practices catch-and-release with mice, grew to love the kitten and started bringing it toys right before it got adopted. My lesson: Fostering is a nice option when a cat needs a home, but if you do it right, surrendering the foster can be emotionally difficult on the "parent" and on some of the animal companions in the house.
