Do Ragdoll Cats Tend to Overeat if Given the Chance?
September 5th, 2010
I am very interesting in the breed and was curious. So say if I left a bowl of food on the floor all day would it eat it all?
and could you give me any tips on this breed.
thank you !
First, do a search for ragdoll cats and explore some of the links.
Never allow a cat or dog to self feed. Cats should be fed animal protein based wet food twice a day. Check out http://www.maxshouse.com

all neutered and spayed cats will over eat. but i am unsure on it being a trait of the breed. most cats i have handled will eat if its offered.
it is dangerous to over feed any pet.
im not sure with cats, but dogs will over eat constantly as they are unsure to when they are full. i think the same occurs with cats. its an extremely old trait of the wild animals they used to be.
eat as much as they can incase they dont catch more prey again for a while. hope this helped.
Regardless of breed some cats will eat too much. If your adult cat is overeating do NOT let him/her free-feed. Follow the feeding guidelines on the bag of food. You can split the total amount, say a cup, into two half cup servings; one serving given in the morning and the other in the evening.
Kittens should be allowed to free-feed. You can gradually train them to accept non free-feeding as they become adults.
I don’t really know about that breed, but most cats and dogs will overeat, if you leave food out for them. I have a tendancy to feed less than the products recommend for both cats and dogs. Feed in the am. and the pm., unless it is a kitten. Kittens need multiple feedings. Some cats really like dry food with some canned mixed in and lots of water to make it a little soupy. That seems to be a delicacy to lots of felines.
Any cat can overeat if feed 24/7. I only free feed kittens up to 4-5 months old maximum. Then they go to a two meal a day schedule with no food left out. Dry in the morning; canned at night.
Never had a fat cat doing this.
My cats enjoy eating small meals throughout the day. It is really better for their urinary tract to have several meals rather than two large meals. Cats who eat several small meals a day have a more acidic pH on the average than cats fed only one or two big meals. It is unrealistic for those of us who work to be able to feed our cats several small meals so I just decided to leave some food out. Some days they eat more than other days. They seem to be unlike dogs because when the cat is full it stops eating. My cat is 7 years old, neutered, and I leave dry food out for him. My other cat is only 9 months and I haven’t had her very long, but she seems to be the same way and always leaves food on her plate. I give them wet food 3 times a week and they never finish the whole can because they don’t like to eat the leftover wet food even if I heat it up. They prefer the dry to leftover wet food. It is frustrating because the wet food is better for their urinary tracts. So sometimes I just add some water to the dry food. Cats are different. There are probably some Garfield cats that eat and eat and eat. You could just leave out some dry food for the cat to snack on just not a huge bowl of it. Its best not to leave say two days worth of food out for it because bacteria and saliva could mix on the dish so put out the recommended amount of kibble that is on the bag. If you feed it canned food or other meat, just put out less kibble for snacking.
I think that all cats will over eat if givin a chance. Fat Cats are Unheathly Cats!!
