I’m away from home about 4 nights a week, so I leave my pj’s on the bed so they can "smell" my scent. I also will leave on a radio so they hear human voices.
There is a product called Feliway you could try. It’s like those air fresheners you plug into a wall outlet but instead of putting perfume in the air they put out cat pheromones. Humans can’t smell it but cats can. My vet says it smells like another cat that is happy and friendly. This "happy friendly cat" makes the real cat feel more comfortable. I use it to keep my cats from peeing on the rug, but it should work for separation anxiety too.
You can buy it wherever you buy pet medications such as the vet’s office or petmeds.com etc. Good luck!
Most cats enjoy looking out the window…especially if they can watch birds or squirrels. I have made a special place in front of my window for my two kitties & outside I feed the critters. This occupys them while I am out. If you don’t have a location to feed the critters…maybe you could try leaving the radio or tv on when you leave. Theres actually a dvd just for cats to watch of birds etc!
Hope this helps & it sounds like your kitty really loves you!
I’m afraid I’m not really giving you a solution, but instead telling you there may not be much that can be done. I have a bengal who also meows loudly when I leave. What can we say, they miss us? However, being in an apartment I’m sure is difficult with how loudly cats can cry.
If your cat plays with toys and likes treats maybe you can leave some around the apartment for him/her to find.
I still feel you may continue to have a meowing kitty.
Good luck!
You should buy a stuffed animal and then sleep with it so it has your scent all over it. Before you leave put it with the kitten and it will think you (at least a part of you) is staying behind.
Have you thought of getting another cat to keep it company? When my last roommate moved in, my male cat started peeing everywhere to mark his territory (he did not like my new roommate – a guy – but I didn’t really like him either, so I couldn’t blame him). I had to send Remington to live with my parents until the lease was up (Remington is the cat, not the roommate). My female, Rowena, is extremely attached to Remington, and was desperately lonely without him. I had to get her a playmate so she would calm down when I was gone. I’d literally have to spend the entire night holding her and carrying her with me wherever I went when I got home from work. After I got Nim she was fine.
Your ragdoll must have more symese blend in him. Mine doesn’t cry loudly…..but he does do a lot of talking. Have you tried putting him on your bed with your pyjamas or some piece of your clothing….if he can smell you, it may comfort him.
