Teaching Ragdoll Kittens Not to Fear a Bath?
May 26th, 2010
My darling 8 week old purr-balls sometimes step in their poo when trying to bury it.
How do I teach them to tolerate a quick bath without freaking out? Last night we had a pooey paw to clean. Rinsing under warm water was fine but he freaked out afterwards when he realised his paw was wet.
You can always teach a cat to like baths
Put the kitten in the tub (no water) and play his/her FAVE game then put A teeny tiny bit of water in…Play with the kitten some more
Then get some bath wipes for cats (Look in most pet stores) Then you can start whiping your Kitten with the wipe while he/she is in the tub with a little water. Then move to the next stage…Get a small cup and a couple kitty treats and pour a teeeeeny tiny bit and treat with plent praise
Soon enough teach your cat (be patient) To enjoy Water.
as a general rule: Cats Hate Water
i have a Maine Coone, they are also long haired,,,and even though he has been just inside cat,,,,,,,felt the need to have to bathe him. my vet said,,,,,why do u wish to do this? they clean themselves, they are not like dog, who needs bathed,,,,,all it did was make his fur more matted together and him suffer while i tried brushing it all out…. He is 8 yrs. old now,,,,,,fur is beautiful (brushing almost daily) and hasnt had a bath in 7 years……he smells great!!
try giving him a treat when you bathe him. it’s like training. they get a nice treat when they do this, maybe it’s not so bad.
cats can be bathed but its hard since they hate water for some reason since the cat is 8 weeks old you should get it used to the water while its young, your cat is not going to like it very much being wet if you dry him off relle good he might freak out less
I don’t actually think you can teach a cat not to be afraid of water. It’s their instinct and they have to follow it. You can still give them a bath.
You just have to be very careful because they might scratch you. It’s always better to do it with a few people helping you.
Get some special shampoo for your cat and if you have a large sink you can put them in(sometimes people have really big sinks in their laundry room) then put them in there but if you don’t have one then just put them in the bathtub, it doesn’t really matter but in my opinion large sinks are better.
Or you can just get a professional groomer.
Hope this helps!
