I would say the best cat for your two kids and a lovable family cat would be a ragdoll or black tabby. (makesure the tabby is a black girl the orange ones are meal and can hurt you kids but the black ones are as lovable as you can get) yes ragdoll shed but that is what long hairs do. Most cats love kids, like these to breeds. You can also try ur local shelter, they will suggest the best! :)

Both are wonderful breeds and very good with families. My personal choice would be the British Shorthair because you don't have to bush and comb as often. Ragdolls do need to be groomed often, not like a Persian but you do have to maintain the coat or you will have lots of knots and matting.

And, don't forget all the wonderful cats at the shelter. There's a kitten waiting just for you!

I used to have a ragdoll and currently own a British shorthair! While both have pros for children, I might say that British shorthair are better for kids because they are extremely playful cats and truly like interactive play up until the age of 4 - before they start behaving like normal cats :-). However, my shorthair needs much brushing herself, so don't be fooled by the short hair - it's lovely fur and sheds.

British shorthairs generally don't like to be held as much and they aren't much of a lap cat, but they love to be pet and can be quite affectionate at times. However, it's their love of play which I think is more attractive for kids - and if they need something to cuddle, you can get them a stuffed animal!
