Why Wont My Male Ragdoll Breed Cat Let Me Hold Him Much?

He is 1 1/2 years old and 9 1/2 pounds. He will let you hold him sometimes but other wise he tries very hard to get away from you. He also sheds A LOT. Does anyone know how to keep him from shedding? (we tried brushing) Will a bath help?
